Aloha,
Thank you for joining us at the Pōpolo Project as we head into our third year as a start-up organization in Honolulu.
Even as a young organization, we have been able to do some big things in just a short time. We’ve created opportunities for Black people in Hawai‘i to be seen in new ways, connecting to global conversations on Blackness, and we’ve created space to explore the richness of the African and Pacific diasporas that converge in our islands.
We hope that as you click through to learn more about our community and our approach you will be inspired, just as we are, by the vivid, complex diversity of Black experiences and identities in our region. In these pages you’ll meet children and elders, artists, entrepreneurs, and visionaries, who, by living their lives, are changing what we commonly think Hawai‘i looks like and what we know Hawai‘i can be.
Mahalo for being a part of our growing community!
Ke aloha nui kākou,
Akiemi Glenn, PhD
