You’re invited to release of the new book “Skimmed: Breastfeeding, Race, and Injustice” (Stanford University Press, Dec 2019) by Andrea Freeman.  The event will feature a conversation between the author and community activists, and an open discussion.

Skimmed tells the story of "The Famous Fultz Quads”—identical sisters born into a Black tenant farming family in North Carolina in 1946. Their White doctor sold the rights to use the girls for marketing purposes to the highest-bidding formula company. Over half a century later, baby formula is a seventy-billion-dollar industry and Black mothers have the lowest breastfeeding rates in the country. Examining history, marketing, media, popular culture, and law, Skimmed shows how feeding America's youngest citizens is fraught with legal and social inequalities.
