INSTALLATION DETAILS:
The Paper Bag Series: "God Is Here" examines the artist’s identity as a Black woman residing in Hawai'i. The portraits explore the relationships of locale, heritage and impermanence as markers of personal identity. Through choosing utilitarian paper bags, reference is made to the historical and contemporary use of colorism: discrimination based on skin color. Phase I of the series focuses on black women of Hawaii from diverse life experiences sharing the bond of sisterhood through ancestry. The women play diverse roles in Hawaii such as Capoerista, Speech Pathologist, Muslim, Dancer, Musician, Mother, Herbalist, Chef, Educator, Healer, Singer and Lawyer.

The objective of the Dibujo Nocturna series is to explore a reality where the spirit and culture of the African diaspora is revered. It is a response to the external queries of integrity and value. Within this series there is a return to innocence; Following the birth and life of an august child. How often does mainstream media convey the sanctity of the African experience? The subjects of this series continue that dialog, becoming visual representations of the love and respect necessary for today’s portrait of the African diaspora.
